Read for A Cause Every year the Mattoon Public Library holds a reading program which keeps kids reading throughout the summer. Participating in programs such as this helps kids retain what they learned in the last school year and be more prepared for the next school year. We have also held a summer reading program for teens and adults for the last several years. The great things about our summer reading programs are that we do not dictate what someone has to read. Patrons who listen to audio books are also allowed to participate since listening to books is another form of literacy. Everyone who reaches their goal gets a small prize. This year the library would like to set a higher goal for participants and challenge library patrons to Read for a Cause. We are asking local businesses to match the total number of books read with a donation. Even a tax deductible donation as small as a penny per book adds up fast. We estimate that between 1500 and 3000 books are read each summer by participants. Realizing that numbers may be smaller or even larger than anticipated, we will gladly allow sponsors limit their sponsorship if needed. For example, if at the end of the reading program participants have read 3527 books sponsored at $.05 per book would raise $176.35. A donor with a limited sponsorship of $150.00 would only receive an invoice for $150.00. At the end of the reading program, sponsors will receive a list of all books read by the participants, as well as other statistics such as how many books are read by particular age groups. For what will funds be used? The Mattoon Public Library is a 107 year old building in constant need of upkeep. The funds raised in the Read for a Cause will go toward repairing the library’s outside stairs and walkways. Print out a sponsorship sheet here!
